One By One

SONG DESCRIPTION

For a while now I’ve wanted to write another uptempo song. If you speak to songwriters most will say that they’re probably the hardest to write.

I had the idea of ‘rebuilding’ and that all of us have had to do some sort of rebuilding since the COVID outbreak.

This song is about the realisation and belief that you can get back to normal slowly but surely and that there is hope, step by step, bit by bit. It’s for anyone who’s had to start again. It’s called ‘One by One’...

LYRICS

One By One - Paul Hawksworth

V1

I’m gonna build the pieces where they fell

Pick it up and be myself

Put my best foot forward, what’s done is done

I’m walking step by step, one by one

V2

I’m gonna pull the thorn from my side

Wipe the dust from my eyes

I don’t need to think about where I’ve come from

I’m walking step by step, one by one

Chorus

I’m getting back

I’m getting in straight

I can start a new day

I can turn a new page

I’m moving up

I’m moving on

I can see new a day

A second chance is calling

V3

I’m gonna feel the breeze in my hair

Find my home, set down there

Breathing in the sunlight as a new day dawns

I’m walking step by step, one by one

I’m walking step by step, one by one

Chorus

I’m getting back

I’m getting in straight

I can start a new day

I can turn a new page

I’m moving up

I’m moving on

I can see new a day

A second chance is calling

Bridge

Bit by bit, what’s done is done

I'm walking step by, one by one

Day by day, what’s done is done

I'm walking step by, one by one

Chorus

I’m getting back

I’m getting in straight

I can start a new day

I can turn a new page

I’m moving up

I’m moving on

I can see new a day

A second chance is calling

Bridge

Bit by bit, what’s done is done

I'm walking step by, one by one

Day by day, what’s done is done

I'm walking step by, one by one

I'm walking step by, one by one

ALTERNATE VERSION

This song started out life with a completely different feel and groove. It was based around a folky guitar fingerpicking pattern which I eventually dropped because I felt it was a little distracting from the vocal. Here’s my iPhone voice memo (where I record all my rough demos). Let me know if you prefer this version…I may resurrect it for you one day!

Thank you for supporting me in my music! I can’t wait to share more songs with you soon…
